The first day

At long last, Lexi's preschool started today!
It's by far the latest start date of any program in town.
We're not sure how much of the year she will finish out in CT,
but Miss Mary and Miss Jackie are known around school as the "dream team",
so we're thrilled for Lexi to be in class with them
and all her same buddies for the 4's.
She told us yesterday she was "a little bit nervous" about the first day,
which is the EXACT same thing I told my own mom at this age.
But this morning she woke up raring to go,
and with distinct outfit ideas that differed from mine, to boot.
I stood my ground,
and she looked cute and "on trend" if I do say so myself :)
Despite all the smiles, there were a few moments when panic set in...
because today, of all days, my car wouldn't start.
The battery was dead, dead, dead no matter how hard I pushed that start button.
Turns out a little miss didn't close her car door all the way last night,
and her parents didn't catch the mistake.
With both girls happily strapped into their car seats, along with a
lunch box, backpack, snack bag, water bottle, diaper bag, school paperwork,
cell phone, big camera, and two lovies all set and ready to roll,
I jumped out of the car wondering what on Earth to do next.
Annie's mom couldn't bring us in her car since there was no room
for all the car seats.
All my other mom friends in town had their own drop offs at the same exact time.
Vic would never make it home from work in time.
Should I call the town taxi service?
Could we walk? (panic was clearly setting in now - for those of you who know
the haul that Greenfield Hill is from our house).
So, I did what any wife/mom would do.
I called for reinforcements (and a more level head)
Vic reminded me that our neighbor's son's car was likely parked in their garage
since he's away at college.
A quick call to their cell phones, and I was typing in their garage code,
dragging two heavy car seats (and their occupants) through the bushes,
and reloading all of our gear,
while attempting to remain calm for my little preschooler.
I billed it as a fun first day of school adventure,
and she totally bought into it.
Most of Fairfield could hear us racing to school in that Blazer today,
but we arrived with time to spare.
And Alexis had a wonderful first day - which is really all that matters!
Now...here's hoping tomorrow morning is not quite as eventful.
